Italian 211 and/or 212: Intermediate Italian (3 credits each) Sequence stresses reading, writing, listening, and speaking Italian to prepare for upper-division courses in the language. Taught in Italian.
Italian 314: Highlights of Italian Civilization (3 credits) Survey of Italian civilization with special attention to major social, political, and cultural achievements. Counts as gen ed (OC) or VolCore (GC-I, OC), Italian major or minor credit. Taught in English.
MFLL 200: Highlights of Italian Civilization (3 credits) Survey of Italian civilization with special attention to major social, political, and cultural achievements. Counts as gen ed (Cul&Civ). Taught in English.
Music Theory 305: Italian Musical Styles (3 credits); intended for music non-majors and Italian students, may be used for general education requirements, no prerequisites required. Taught in English.
Study of important stylistic and compositional trends in Italian music that lead to significant Western cultural impacts in music, such as the polyphony of the Italian Renaissance, ornamentation and “improvisation" in Baroque Italy, the concerto, the sonata, and Italian operatic forms and styles, such as recitativo, aria, tempo di mezzo, cantabile, and cabaletta. Music Theory 305: Italian Musical Styles; intended for music majors. Counts as VolCore (EI, AH, AOC).
Music Theory 220: Theory IV (3 credits); intended for music majors. A continuation in the music theory sequence with further study of basic elements of western art music (here from the late 19th and 20th centuries). The portion of the course will focus on late nineteenth century music. The remaining weeks will be dedicated to surveying compositional styles and methods of the twentieth century, up until about the 1970s. Taught in English. Counts as Gen Ed/Vol Core (QR, EI).
